Pigs on the Wing
If you didn't care what happened to me,
And I didn't care for you,
We would zig zag our way through the boredom and pain
Occasionally glancing up through the rain.
Wondering which of the buggars to blame
And watching for pigs on the wing..... Pink Floyd

Peace can only be found through Love. A smile can change the World.

Calling Allen Ginsberg
By Lydia Howell
I'm listening for your finger-cymbals,
worn like wedding rings
for your unrecognized husband.
We still need you, Allen Ginsberg,
son of Blake & Walt Whitman.
You shouted your illegal love
from Golden Gate bridge.
Sang love across the Grand Canyon.
Proclaimed love at the Washington Monument.
Prayed love outside the Pentagon.
Danced love over the rooftops of Manhatten.
In this new Plague-time,
when love has married death.
When a shopping mall stands on a sweatshop.
Now, they want our hearts
behind barbed wire and the militarized border.
Padlocked shut.
Oh! playful wanderer & rebel,
we need you now!
They're making new wars.
They're misquoting God.
You would hail all the lovers
to monkey-wrench the killing machine.
Tell us to writhe blissfully
until all the deadly parts stop.
Inspire a strike in every weapons factory.
Disarm the gun of every cop
with a poem, making him remember
he's one of us.
Oh! great chant-sayer!
Summon all the lovers
to finally Ban the Bomb once and for all.
We'd caress the men at the controls
until they abandon their posts.
We could rust all the triggers
with our tears & spit & sweat.
Bearded Puck! dear Allen,
we need you now.
Lead us in shedding our clothes
& skipping thrugh the halls of government.
So they see men, women & children.
Not collateral damage statistics.
Not profit margin.
Read HOWL to the Supreme Court.
Sprinkle love-dust in the Attorney General's eyes.
Take a rose in your teeth
& tango with generals.
Lead us in singing torch songs
that echo every extinct bird,
every murdered man of color,
until they amke a shrine
of every death chamber.
Say your poems until CEOs
& their hired torturers
can weep once more.
Embrace the soldiers
until they refuse to go to war
& scribble love-letter on their duty-notice.
We need you now, Allen.
Give us the courage to stand & resist
until the guns & the greed
are transformed into a bad dream
we finally wake from.
The TVs are blasting so loud.
They're banning your poems again.
In the streets, no dancing is allowed.
I'm carrying your book like a secret passport
to the America that we dream is possible.
Now, in our great trouble,
we need you, Allen Ginsberg.
Great sunflower,
grown tall out of the rubble.

Media Carta is the human-rights battle of our information age. It is about us, the people, taking a stand against a media system that shuts us out and dominates our lives. It’s about building-up an entirely new communication order to replace it, one that has at its foundation the direct, democratic participation of citizens. It’s about reclaiming our most basic freedom – the Human Right to Communicate.

This test only has one question, but it's a very important one. By
giving an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally. No
one else will know, so you wont be fooling anyone but yourself if you
give anything but a truthful answer.
The test features an unlikely, completely fictional situation in which
you will have to make a decision.
Remember that your answer needs to be honest, yet spontaneous.
> > Please read slowly and thoughtfully, giving due consideration to each
.
Here's the situation:
You are in Florida; Miami to be specific. There is chaos all around you
caused by a hurricane with severe flooding. This is a flood of biblical
proportions. You are a photo journalist working for a major newspaper,
and you're caught in the middle of this epic disaster. The situation is
nearly hopeless. You're trying to shoot career-making photos. There are
houses and people swirling around you, some disappearing under the
water. Nature is unleashing all of its destructive fury. Suddenly you
see a man floundering in the water. He is fighting for his life, trying
not to be taken down with the debris. You move closer...somehow the man
looks familiar. You suddenly realize who it is. It's George W. Bush,
President of the United States!!
At the same time you notice that the raging waters are about to take him
under... forever. You have two options-you can save the life of G.W.
Bush, or you can shoot a dramatic Pulitzer Prize winning photo,
documenting the death of one of the world's most powerful men.
So here's the question, and please give an honest answer:
Would you select high contrast color film, or would you go with the
classic simplicity of black and white?

Kurt Vonnegut vs. the !*!@
By Joel Bleifuss
"As war against Iraq looms, I asked Vonnegut, a reader and supporter of this magazine, to weigh in. Vonnegut is an American socialist in the tradition of Eugene Victor Debs, a fellow Hoosier whom he likes to quote: “As long as there is a lower class, I am in it. As long as there is a criminal element, I am of it. As long as there is a soul in prison, I am not free.”
The War Prayer
by Mark Twain
"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle
-- be Thou near them! With them -- in spirit -- we also go forth from the sweet
peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear
their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling
fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder
of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay
waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts
of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out
roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated
land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the
icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the
refuge of the grave and denied it -- for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast
their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy
their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the
blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the
Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are
sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.
(*After a pause.*) "Ye have prayed it; if ye still desire it, speak! The
messenger of the Most High waits!"

"No Iraqis Left Me on a Roof to Die"
Katrina and Cindy Blow into Town
By Tom Engelhardt
Photos by Tam Turse

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

The Real Yoda: The Pentagon Feels the Heat
Kenny Ausubel, (from the Bioneers)
"There is indeed a clash of civilizations, but in this case it is not between Islam and tghe West, or tradition and modernism. It is between a desposable civilization and a sustainable civilization. We have creaded a civilization that is a suicide bomb. We need to start disarming it right away."......

JOAN BAEZ PERFORMS AT CRAWFORD ANTI-WAR VIGIL
In the first march I went to (opposing Vietnam) there were 10 of us. This is huge,” Baez told relatives of fallen U.S. soldiers Sunday before performing a free concert just up the road from the ranch.
About 500 people gathered to hear her on a 1-acre lot offered by a landowner who opposes the war. Not far away, protesters continued a camp-out started by grieving mother Cindy Sheehan.
Baez said a movement like this was waiting to happen.
“It was the final tear for the overflow and you can’t stop running water,” she said. “Cindy’s was the final tear.”

Maria Langen of Wailuku (foreground from left in photo above), Joy Brann of Kula and Rena Morningstar Blumberg of Kihei pass out votive candles and protest signs at a candlelight vigil Wednesday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. The event was held in a show of support for Cindy Sheehan, a California mother who is camped outside of President George Bush’s Crawford ranch. Vigil participants said Sheehan’s efforts to talk to the president about her son’s death in Iraq have galvanized Americans opposed to the war. Read More Here.

'End This War': Hundreds of Thousands Protest Iraq War
by Lisa Lambert

Cindy Sheehan Speaking at the Washington Sept. 24 protest
"We in the peace movement need to agree on one thing: yes we need an exit plan, but it is not a strategy, it is a command. The command should be: have all of our military personnel and paid killer mercenaries out of Iraq within 6 months and the generals carry out the command. Simple, it's not brain surgery and I think it is so easy even George Bush can sign the order. We can't give the homicidal maniacs any wiggle room or long term strategy sessions. For one thing, when our leaders strategize, we are put in even more jeopardy, they have proven that they are not too bright or even a little compassionate. But the most important thing is that people die everyday in Iraq for absolutely no reason and for lies. We have to say NOW because the people on the other side are saying NEVER. We can't compromise, we can't say please, and we can't retreat. If we do, our country is doomed. We have to honor the sacrifices of our loved ones by completing the mission of peace and justice. It is time. "

A Message Of Hope from the Hopi Nation
To my fellow swimmers,
There is a river flowing now very fast.
It is so great and swift that there are those
who will be afraid.
They will try to hold on to the shore.
They will feel that they are being torn
apart and will suffer greatly.
Know that the river has its destination.
The elders say we must let go of the shore,
push off into the middle of the river, keep
our eyes open and our heads above the water.
And I say “See who is in there with you and
celebrate!”
At this time in history we are to take
nothing personally, least of all ourselves.
For the moment that we do, our spiritual
growth and journey comes to a halt
The time of the lone wolf is over .
Gather yourselves!
Banish the word “struggle” from your vocabulary.
All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner
and in celebration.
WE ARE THE ONES
WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR.
