A Short History of the Hippie Museum - by Alicia Bay Laurel
Neill Kramer , a professional museum display designer and web business professional, got the idea of starting a hippie museum online. He ran the words Hippie Museum through a search engine and found a blog on my website, which Tim Miller, professor of religious studies at U Kansas Lawrence, hippie commune alumnus and author of many books on communes, and I, the author/illustrator of Living on the Earth, a hippie how-to guide to country living, were discussing the creation of a museum show about hippie communes that would travel from museum to museum. Neill emailed me and we began discussing the idea of a Hippie Museum.
I think Neill set up the Yahoo Group for the museum, and we attracted a bunch of creative people, including Char~* (our Webmistress and Glowing Ember ), Albert Bates of The Farm, composer/author Ramon Sender, Tim Miller, and Nicole Savage of the sfheart website.
From there we formed a Board of Directors (Alicia, Neill, Char and Albert) and began work on obtaining non-profit status
As to how Caroling Geary and Wholeo got to the Museum: One day I googled my name and got to her website about Wholeo, where she had mentioned Ramon's and my book Being of the Sun. So I wrote her a note in which I mentioned that she might want to trade links with the Hippie Museum. Eventually that led to Caroling reconstructing Wholeo at the Farm. Hooray for the Internet! .....
