Further Commentary by John Shiflet
I've been thinking today about why bringing the original Furthur back has such strong symbolic significance.
History.
Riding in and atop the Magic Bus Furthur, Ken Kesey with his gypsy band of Merry Pranksters spread the seeds of the psychedelic revolution across America in the mid-1960's. If Kesey and his East Coast counter-part Timothy Leary were the prophets, then LSD was their sacrament. A lot of young Americans (and freaks around the world) turned on, tuned in, and dropped out. Even the Beatles, at the peak of their popularity, had to change musically to reflect the new reality. By the time Kesey retired Furthur to the "swamp" the psychedelic revolution had arrived, peaked, and then lost momentum. Kesey was insistent that Further not be moved. Could it be he knew there would be a future time when it would be needed? He could have just as easily junked out Furthur 1 since he later created Furthur 2. Yet he let the old bus quietly sit-Kesey had great insight.
In the early 1970's most of the young folks from the Hippie movement were starting to raise families and were settling down to jobs and living in their homes. The war in Viet-Nam was winding down. The Clean Air Act and the E.P.A. were established. Nixon was forced to leave the White House in 1973 and many of the restless young revolutionaries believed the system was working. Gerald Ford was an awkward, non-threatening figure followed by forever smiling Jimmy Carter. Willy Nelson smoked reefer with the President's son on the roof of the White House, those were pretty cool times.
In a way, socially, America paralleled Furthur. The 1970's, youth settled back down to their jobs and raising a family as the hot-button issues of the late 1960's seem to have retreated to the background.
Fast forward to 2005. Somehow all of those social and cultural gains made in the 1960's and 1970's have been lost. Only lip service is being given now to protecting the environment. Pollution in the larger cities is as bad as it ever was-worse in many cases. We are once again in a war overseas without a clear focus except to somehow bring our "Democracy" to the people of Iraq and Afghanistan. It might have helped to ask the Iraqi's and Afghani's if they wanted it first. The members of the Bush administration are appearing these days to be as corrupt as those in the Nixon administration. They were elected by the same conservative, "moral majority" voter base. Those Americans who do not fit into this right-wing ideological camp feel alienated. Many feel Bush stole the previous election and has used deceit to justify the war overseas. After the Katrina fiasco and finding the American economy being dominated and dictated by Big Oil and a few giant multi-national conglomerates, small wonder many Americans are once again feeling alienated from the dominant culture. Today, it doesn't take LSD to reveal which way the wind is blowing.
Like the heroic, famous bus coming out of the swamp, those of us from the counter-cultural days of old again are feeling again the stirrings in our consciousness telling us that change is in the air. The young folks of today are feeling it too. Just as it was inevitable that old Furthur would be brought out of the swamp and will be readied for a future use, so should we feel like we're being called together for a purpose. We've figuratively been in the swamp growing moss for too long-a new dawn may be rising. Let's be ready.
Peace,
John S.

-"..the action of people coming together to make something happen.."
what word in that sentence is not operative, full of possibility, and
shined with Truth?. I raised my son 8 miles down the outrageously
dangerous hwy.58,in a town ot 630 people,Lowell,............It was a glourious
thing to behold, cruising down that highway to go to Springfield or
Eugene for groceries, or Pleasant Hill if the weather was too stormy.
That bus shone from within, thru those scraggly winter trees and in
the blossoming times of the year it was like a
huge, living, breathing, dragon, sleeping and dreaming and waiting...
just had to add my 2ceants worth, it strikes soooo close to "home"
for me and my son.
love, peace, and more love,

message
on our way out of this lifetime. Earlier we were driven by
idealism, curiosity, innocense, love, peace and joy. Today we are
