This is Michael Kliks PhD.
He came to Morningstar Ranch early in 1968 and to both Wheelers
and Morningstar in 1969. He is a gifted photographer as you can see in
some of these photos.
Some of the photos here were published in APERTURE in about 1979.
Michael says:
"Aloha no kakou!
Our "Love Child" Malissa Charoesiri (Miss Coco) was conceived, at least
conceptually, in Coleman Valley. . .to see her wedding in Chiang Mai, where
she was born, check out the Web site our family friends made at: http://www.homeshaman.com.
The most memorable visit was the night we sat in the orchard at Morningstar
(June 1968?) and watched the full moon while the Apollo mission astronauts
stepped out and took there first walk. We all were walking with them of
course.
I have attached some promo info on our fine, raw, pure Hawaiian honeys.
More later.

“Beekeeper’s Reserve”
The Manoa Honey Company “Beekeeper’s Reserve, Aged in the Hive
5 Years” is a blend of honeys produced from a wide variety of flower nectars
collected by our bees in the Ko`olau Mountains from La`e`ahi Crater to
Waiahole-Waikane to Kahuku. These rich, dark honeys have been allowed
to age in the hive for an average of 5 years. Aging in the hive gives
the bees additional time to dehydrate and concentrate the subtle flavor
and aroma of these honeys by their continuous fanning. As water is
evaporated from each cell, the hive bees add more nectar resulting in enriched
flavor and a significant increase in the density of sugars, enzymes, antioxidants,
trace elements, and vitamins in our honey. Our Beekeeper’s Reserve
has a specific gravity of nearly 1.5, thus it contains about 25% more natural
sugar than an equal volume of US Fancy grade commercial honeys. We
also produce pure a kiawe honey from our La`e`ahi Crater Apiary honey that
is available either as a medium amber liquid “Crater Kiawe” or as a naturally
crystallized, rare, premium honey we call “Crater Kiawe Cream”. Occasionally
we produce several very distinctive regional honeys such as Waikane Golden
and Wai`anae Coast.
After extraction from the comb, our honeys are not filtered nor cooked:
they are allowed to stand for a week and then they are warmed slightly,
skimmed, and strained. This gentle processing retains our honeys’
volatile flavor and taste elements and preserves a high level of natural
pollen proteins, antioxidants, enzymes and vitamins contributed by the
bees themselves.
Such aged honeys have always been highly regarded in Africa and the
Orient as medicines (for both topical and internal use), as topical
aphrodisiacs, as wells as foods and as the sugar source for highly valued
alcoholic beverages. The first man-made alcoholic drinks were probably
derived from naturally fermented honey found when hives were destroyed
in storms or by fire. Such valuable honeys were included in funeral
offerings from Egypt to China and have been recovered, still edible, after
2000 years of storage. We currently make many varieties of delicious
meads (all honey wine), pyments (honey+grape wine), melomels (honey+fruit
wine), and metheglins (hopped mead ales) for home consumption and as gifts.
NOTE: Nectar is a dilute sucrose sugar solution produced as an adjunct
to sexual reproduction in flowering plants. It is ingested by foraging
bees and delivered to the hive where the hive bees add enzymes that convert
the nectar to fructose and glucose and deposit it in comb cells.
Within the cells it is continuously being dehydrated by the fanning action
of the bees’ wings. The longer the honey is stored in the hive the
more water is lost. In aged honeys such as our Beekeeper’s Reserve,
the sugar content becomes so high that the honey is hygroscopic, that is,
it is actually dryer than air, and will absorb moisture when exposed.
In so doing an equivalent amount of heat is released, resulting in a distinct
warming sensation when applied to the lips or other sensitive tissues.
This effect, and their soothing sweetness, is undoubtedly related
to the reputation of aged honeys as medicines and aphrodisiacs.
Pele’s Gold
FAMOUS VIRGIN HONEY
is a blend of 100% Hawaiian, 100% raw, US Choice, honeys produced from
a wide variety of flower nectars collected by our bees in the Wai`anae
and Ko`olau Mountains from Maunawili to Ma`ili. Thick and creamy
at room temperature Pele’s Gold is derived from kiawe, Java plum, Christmas
berry, koa haole, eucalyptus and other forest flowers. It is unfiltered
and unheated and has retained the rich biological activity of its natural
enzymes, yeasts, pollens, waxes, antioxidants, trace elements, and vitamins.
This golden elixir is a product of love and hard work.
